Dreamland is considered to be the oldest-surviving amusement park in Britain, the site originally used as 'Hall by the Sea' since 1860 until being renamed after purchase by John Henry Iles in 1920. In 2003, after decades of decline and a series of owners, the park was under threat of closure and commercial redevelopment. After a successful 'Save Dreamland Campaign' from which the Dreamland Trust raised £18m of public funding to restore Dreamland's Grade II listed Scenic Railway, Grade II listed cinema complex and Grade II-listed menagerie cages the Dreamland restoration project began in January 2010.

According to statistics based on the Strategic Development Information Department, the population of Masiphumelele was originally between 400 to 500 people in the early 1980's but has steadily grown to over 30 000 in 2015. Overcrowding, lack of service delivery and poor sanitation plague the community with fires and floods a constant problem. Housing and the lack there of is one of the major issues facing the ruling African National Congress (ANC) Government.

 Emergency teams operate at the scene where a bus, carrying around 50 tourists, overturned on the A22 (Via do Infante) in Faro, Portimao direction at Algarve, Portugal, June 18, 2015. At least three people died and 29 were wounded, some of them seriously. The injured are still receiving aid at the site, where two helicopters have been sent to transport injured to hospital.
