Johnny Depp on Becoming a Comanche: It Was Beautiful

Ever since Johnny Depp landed the role of Tonto in "The Lone Ranger," he has been vocal about his determination to represent the character with cultural sensitivity. Depp's Tonto is more than a mere sidekick — as was depicted in the original "Lone Ranger" radio and television shows. Tonto has now been promoted to full partner, thanks to Depp.

As the release of the Disney action adventure film draws near, Depp's feelings on Tonto and what he represents have only been emboldened. "The lies that have been perpetuated about the Native Americans for hundreds and hundreds of years now — it's time to stop," he told Yahoo! Movies during a recent interview. "It's silly, now."

Just more than a year ago, Depp, who is himself part Native American, was named an honorary Comanche. "It certainly upped the stakes a lot," he said of the experience's affect on his "Lone Ranger" role.

The actor, who recently turned 50, participated in the Comanche naming ceremony at the behest of Native American activist LaDonna Harris — who Depp calls his "Comanche mother." During the ritual, Depp was given the name "Mahwoomae," which means "shape-shifter" — certainly appropriate for someone who is known to change both physically and vocally for his film roles.

Depp happily discussed with Yahoo! Movies the impact the experience had on him. "It was beautiful," he said. "An exchanging of gifts — a real sense of honest warmth from these people."

During the traditional ceremony, Depp was smoked with cedar and prayers were recited, according to Harris.

During our interview, Depp elaborated: "Some of them have what they've got and some of them have less than that. But no matter what they're the most generous people I've ever known."

Depp's Tonto is, in fact, depicted as a Comanche Indian. "My initial approach [to Tonto] was to … do it right by them," he said. "But then when you get around these people and you learn about these people and you speak to the elders … You can't help but feel an even deeper sense of responsibility."

"The Lone Ranger" lands in theaters July 3.

Marriage Proposals After DOMA: Taking It to the Tweets

In the rush of excitement after the Supreme Court struck down the Defense of Marriage Act on Wednesday, actress Kristen Bell jumped onto Twitter to propose to her fiancé, Dax Shepard, who is also the dad of her 3-month-old baby girl, Lincoln.

She wrote:

Last year Bell explained her reluctance to "make it official" with longtime beau Shepard in an interview. "The reason we're not rushing to get married is because I don't feel appropriate taking advantage of a right that's denied to my best friends. That's why we've been so hesitan,." she told The Advocate."Dax and I have talked about it a lot, and this issue is very important to both of us. We're just standing up for what we believe in. Period."

About an hour and a half later, Shepard responded:

People have been using social media both to commemorate and to facilitate their proposals for years now. There are hundreds of flash mob proposals on YouTube, which have collectively attracted millions of eyeballs. The latest twist is Vine, a platform to make 6-second videos. Recently, a media-savvy marketer commandeered the joint forces of Twitter and Vine to ask for the hand of his sweetie while she was hosting a live chat.

Whether you think public proposals are dreamy or imagine, with a dash of cynicism, that they just make them harder to decline, there is nothing jaded about people popping the question in the wake of the DOMA ruling.

In an interview with CNN, musician Melissa Etheridge, 52, described her reaction to the ruling and her subsequent engagement. "It is about family and I love my four kids. I called my now-fiancĂ©e. I'm looking forward to marrying my partner of three years….I'm going to get married in the state of California. I woke [the kids] up this morning telling them the Supreme Court ruling on DOMA.…I love everybody out there. It's a great day." She added, making a reference to #loveislove, a hashtag trending on Twitter that was even used by President Obama,"Love is love and America is beautiful….I'm proud to be an American."

After her girlfriend, Linda Wallem, accepted, Etheridge tweeted:

The rocker duo Tegan and Sara, who are both openly gay, quipped about all the weddings they would soon be attending:
Not only celebrities are getting into the act. Twitter is buzzing with proposals. "I just asked my girlfriend to marry me and she said yes, Yay for the end of #DOMA and #Prop 8," wrote one user. Another tweeted at his boyfriend, "Congrats on repealing #DOMA America. Does this mean you'll marry me?!?!?! Please?" The (tweeted) response: "but of course!"

Two of the plaintiffs in the Proposition 8 case, Paul Katami and Jeff Zarrillo, who have been in a relationship since 1998, became publicly engaged outside of the courthouse, and their touching proposal is lighting up YouTube. (You can watch it here.)

On the Facebook page Gay Marriage USA there was an outpouring of support for the decision. Hours before it was was announced, a couple wrote: "This February we celebrated our 10 year 'wedding' anniversary....Every 5 years we have, and will, recommit to each other and say the same words we spoke when we were 'married.' [We] are soulmates so on this eve of SCOTUS decisions, especially because we live in California, we pray that the way is paved for us to finally remove the quotes on 'married.' Pray with us!!!" Another user said, "Today's the day I propose to the love of my life." Another posted, "I cried, my marriage is now legal."

Back on Twitter, many others chose to post the simple statement "will you marry me #DOMA" and celebrate the historic ruling in the best possible way: with a gesture of deep, committed love.

Emma Watson: I Only Own Eight Pairs of Shoes

Emma Watson strikes a pose in August's Teen Vogue. (Boo George/Teen Vogue)She may play a pilfering party girl in the Sofia Coppola-directed flick "The Bling Ring," but Emma Watson insists that she's the polar opposite of her fame-hungry, fashion-loving character, Nicki. While the 23-year-old told Teen Vogue that she likes red carpet fashions from Chanel and Dior, she was quick to point out in an interview with "Radio Times" that she's not your typical celebrity fashion fiend.
"I've got about eight pairs of shoes and that's it," she admitted on the radio show.
Yep that's right, little Hermione Granger, who could easily wave her Hollywood wand and have shoes magically appear, keeps it real with less than 10 pairs of footwear, one of which comes from a basic retailer. "[I've got] 4-inch, little brown Bebe shoes."

Those heels are fairly budget-friendly (they rarely top $150, as opposed to $750 Jimmy Choos), and a surprising choice considering the fact that the British beauty is worth an estimated $40 million.
Should her shocking shoe admission be a surprise? Not really. In her August interview with Teen Vogue, Watson explained that she made a conscious decision when she was 9 years old to keep her life as normal as possible, to the point that she never really identified herself as famous.

And to maintain her sanity, she regularly ditches the fancy wardrobe and gobs of makeup in favor of a more low-key look, telling the magazine that she's a huge fan of wallet-savvy retailer, Topshop.
"I try not to wear makeup all the time. It is nice to give your skin a bit of breathing and space. Generally, I wear a lot of sunscreen," she explained.
There you have it; Emma must be the most down-to-earth celebrity in Hollywood history.
"I think, in a way, I was very protected during 'Harry Potter,' because I was working all the time," Watson dished. "I would get in the car, go to the studio, and go home," she said.
In fact, it wasn't until she crossed the pond to attend Brown University in 2009 that the flaxen-haired starlet got a taste of how famous she was.
She isn't your typical A-list star. (Boo George/Teen Vogue)
"It sounds stupid," she confessed, "or completely unbelievable, but that was when I really realized that I was famous. There are still days when I deal with it horribly and there are days when I deal with it really well."
Watson handles her massive stardom by keeping her friends close. "I feel a bit wobbly before hitting a red carpet. So it's always nice to bring friends, especially because I love to see their reactions. It's not normal to get out of a car and have, like, 80 people screaming at you, and so when they say, 'This is crazy,' it makes me feel slightly more sane."

Four Things That Can Send Your Resume into the Trash

You may be the perfect fit for a job -- but a hiring manager is never going to find that out if he trashes your resume after a mere glance. Even in this age of online professional networking, a great resume is still the foundation of a successful job search.
It's common knowledge that spelling errors and grammatical bloopers are trash triggers (and these simple mistakes top many recruiters’ lists of resume pet peeves). But is there anything else that job seekers are unwittingly doing wrong? We asked some recruiting managers and career experts about the resume errors that cause them to crumple and toss a resume at first look -- and some of their answers may surprise you.

1. Your Resume Is Badly Formatted

Looks matter. Career expert Abby Kohut lists misaligned indentations and double spaces as a couple of the things that make a resume start to look like it belongs in the garbage. The fix? Use tabs for indents, and search your document for stray double spaces.

Also beware of being too creative. "I don't like it when I receive resumes with funky fonts," says Mona Abdel-Halim, co-founder of the Web-based resume tool Resunate, who echoed other experts we spoke to. "It is not professional and it makes the resume harder to read." When choosing resume fonts, opt ones that are widely used and readable, such as Calibri or Arial, and use no more than two fonts with their associated bold and italic styles.

2. Your Resume Is Immature

Other hiring managers we talked to said they had immediately trashed resumes with pictures on them -- for example, of cartoon character Bart Simpson (in the case of one applicant for a technical writing job) or of a kitten (an applicant for a customer service job). Cute resume additions like these are for kids -- not professionals.

3. Your Resume Is Too Templated

Longtime recruiter Mike Monroe says that unaltered, familiar resume templates from word-processing programs annoy him. "This won't automatically put you in the trash, but it tells me that you have put less thought into your resume than your competition," he says.

Jessica Campbell, an HR manager for talent agency Voices.com, says one of her pet peeves is "when a candidate has used a template resume," but hasn't updated it before sending it. (And if you use Word's Track Changes feature to edit your resume, make sure to accept all changes in the final version before submitting it.)

To prevent your resume from ending up in the trash for this reason, customize your resume for each job you apply for using the language of the job ad and highlighting your most relevant experience.

"When the resume is not tailored to the position, it shows you don't really understand what the employer is looking for and are just hoping your resume fits some of the criteria,” says career expert Heather Huhman, author of Lies, Damned Lies & Internships: The Truth About Getting from Classroom to Cubicle. “To avoid this mistake, show the employer how you fit those [criteria] through your previous experience, skills and expertise."

4. Your Resume Is Sneaky

Kohut says she immediately distrusts people whose resumes have no dates on them. “Gaps are not a problem,” she says. “The problem is when you try to be deceptive."

David S. Williams, founder and CEO of salary consultancy SpringRaise, agrees, saying that if you are or have been unemployed, don’t try to hide it. “You may be doing yourself a disservice because you may be a strong candidate for a position, but you tried to hide your current status," he says.

A better tactic is to be straightforward on your resume, and then use your cover letter to tell the story of your career's progress -- including information about how you maximized your time away from the 9-to-5 routine. And do remember to write a cover letter -- not doing so is another guaranteed way to get your resume thrown into the trash, according to the experts.

77-Year-Old Golf Legend Gary Player Will Pose Nude For ESPN The Magazines Body Issue

The ages for some of the athletes appearing in ESPN The Magazine's annual body issue are as follows: 25, 23, 33, 24, 77, 23, 29.
Now, you tell us: Which one of those is not like the others?
If you picked 77, you are correct. That's the age of Gary Player, who will become the oldest athlete to appear in ESPN The Magazine's yearly feature. The other ages correspond to Colin Kaepernick, Kenneth Faried, Swin Cash, Agnieszka Radwanska, Sydney Leroux and Joffrey Lupul, respectively.
The issue, one of the magazine's most popular, shows athletes nude in different poses. Player, who won nine major titles and is considered one of the best golfers ever, will be the seventh golfer to appear in the Magazine.
The South African-born Player, who earned the nickname Mr. Fitness in the 1950s, has always been in good shape. He is said to have logged more than 15 million miles during his career, traveling around the world to play in tournaments.
Two years ago Player told the Wall Street Journal that he does 1,000 situps and pushups every morning in addition to a vigorous cardio routine.
"People said weight training was detrimental to golfers," Player said. "I was squatting 325 pounds the night before I won my first U.S. Open in 1965."
Player takes enough pride in his physical condition that his official website GaryPlayer.com features the following photo:

Top 10 Most Powerful Stars

See where Oprah Winfrey, Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber, and more land on the 2013 edition of Forbes's annual Celebrity 100 list.

#10 Ellen DeGeneres The star and executive-producer of the daytime talk show hit "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," now in its 10th year and drawing 3.5 million viewers daily, will soon be back on the silver screen. She recently signed on to "Finding Dory," a reprise of her role as a charmingly forgetful blue tang fish in Disney-Pixar's $921 million grossing film "Finding Nemo." The 55-year-old CoverGirl is also a social media superstar. Her YouTube channel's 1.7 billion views and 18 million Twitter followers have made her a hit with young viewers.
#9 Justin Bieber Since appearing on the cover of Forbes last year, the Canadian crooner has toured the world, picked up another 20 million Twitter followers, and earned another $58 million (that sum would have been even higher if we hadn't credited him with a double-digit million-dollar merchandise advance last year). With stakes in startups including Enflick, Tinychat, and Spotify, he shows no signs of slowing down.
#8 Roger Federer Federer has the most impressive endorsement portfolio in sports, with 10 sponsors that collectively pay him more than $40 million annually, including long-term deals with Nike, Rolex, Wilson, and Credit Suisse. The newest addition is champagne brand Moet & Chandon, which signed Federer to a five-year deal at the end of 2012. Federer's income surged after a barnstorming exhibition tour of South America that netted him $14 million for six events. Why so much? Federer is widely perceived as the greatest tennis player ever. He holds the records for most singles Grand Slam wins (17) and career prize money ($77 million), and he appeared in a staggering 18 out of 19 Grand Slam finals between 2005 and 2010.
#7 Bon Jovi (the band) The ageNew Jersey rockers said it best themselves: Because We Can. That's the name of their latest stadium tour, which is grossing over $3 million per city as they crisscross the globe. All in all, they earned more than Kanye West, Jennifer Lawrence, and Rafael Nadal combined and continued to give back. Last fall, frontman Jon Bon Jovi celebrated the one-year anniversary of the Soul Kitchen, a pay-what-you-can restaurant in Red Bank, N.J.
#6 Taylor Swift Who says the music industry is dead? Swift released her fourth studio album, "Red," in October 2012 and sold 1.2 million copies in week one. The album's first single, "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together," became her first to top Billboard's Hot 100 chart. She parlayed that success into endorsement deals with Diet Coke, Sony, and CoverGirl, not to mention big bucks on the road. She should earn even more next year as she transitions from arena shows to stadium sellouts.
#5 Madonna The "Material Girl" is once again living up to her moniker, earning more than any other member of our Celeb 100. The cash comes mostly from her MDNA Tour, which grossed $305 million, earning her the Top Touring Award at the Billboard Music Awards. Madonna augments her income with heady merchandise sales at concerts as well as her Material Girl clothing line, Truth or Dare fragrance, and investments in coconut water company Vita Coco and others.
#4 Beyonce Knowles After taking a year off to welcome baby Blue Ivy into the world, BeyoncĂ© is back on the road with her Mrs. Carter Show World Tour — a nod to husband Jay-Z, whom she out-earned once again — and makes it back to the upper reaches of our list. In addition to grossing over $2 million in every city she plays, she still collects cash from old hits and non-musical ventures including new deals with Pepsi and H&M, as well as her House of Dereon clothing line.
#3 Steven Spielberg With last year's "Lincoln," Spielberg showed why he's still the most important director in Hollywood. The political tale easily could have been passed over by moviegoers hungry for superhero action. Instead, the film was a hit earning $275 million globally. surprising was the movie's 12 Oscar nominations including one for Spielberg. But he's more than just a director. Last year, Spielberg executive produced "Men in Black 3," and his DreamWorks is still trying to make a go of it in television, even though "Smash" was recently canceled by NBC.
#2 Lady Gaga The Queen Monster would have earned even more had it not been for a hip injury that cut her Born This Way Ball tour short. The tour grossed $168 million through January; had Gaga been able to finish it, she would have likely topped $200 million. Even so, her massive social media presence, including 38 million Twitter followers and 58 million Facebook fans, helps keep her near the top of our list. With a new album in the works, look for her to stay there.

#1 Oprah Winfrey Despite a drop of more than half her income since her talk show went off the air in 2011, the queen of entertainment is back in the top spot thanks to earnings from Harpo-produced TV spin-offs (such as "Dr. Phil," the "Rachael Ray Show," and "The Dr. Oz Show"), as well as her unparalleled access to big names. The world's only African-American billionaire has attracted stars from Lance Armstrong to Rihanna for sit-down confessionals on her OWN network, a joint venture with Discovery Communications which looks set to turn a profit by the end of 2013. Winfrey's portfolio also includes a deal with Sirius radio network and O: The Oprah Magazine.

14 services for the super rich you never knew existed

Courtesy Eskaya - With only 15 villas in this cozy resort, the ambiance is personal and romantic, and your personal butler is at the ready to draw your bath, deliver breakfast in bed, or prepare a beachside barbeque under the stars. Honeymooners adore the pool villas (they never need to leave their room!), but more social creatures prefer lounging by gorgeous infinity pool and swim up bar. The private stretch of beach is decent, though it’s no Boracay or Palawan.

Et Tu, Bratwurst? 8 Surprising Foods that Could Be Harming Your Health

You probably know noshing on Snickers bars or fried chicken daily isn't good for you, but what about the not-so-obvious unhealthy food? It's the items not on nutrition and ingredients labels that may be the most harmful things to your health, according to Dr. Mercola's natural health site. Unfortunately, there's a good chance some of these things are in your kitchen, where you thought you were stocking shelves with healthy choices. Look out for these 8 surprising foods that could be harming your health!
Farmed Salmon Farmed salmon are typically fed soy, poultry litter, and chicken feathers, which causes the fish to be lower in vitamin D and plagued with chemicals, pesticides, and carcinogens.

  Milk with Added Hormones
Farmers sometimes treat their stock with rBGH (recombinant bovine growth hormone) to increase the amount of milk they produce. This leads to an increase in insulin-like growth factor in the milk, a hormone that may lead to several types of cancer in humans.

    Processed Meat
The problem with processed meats is two-fold: 1) They often contain high levels of nitrates and 2) they're usually made from animals that have been fed hormones, antibiotics, and raised in diseased conditions. Nitrates convert to nitrites in the body and have been shown to be related to colorectal cancer, although the evidence is a little unclear these days. Nitrates are particularly dangerous to babies however, as they can interfere with the transport of oxygen in the blood. less

    Margarine
Once thought to be a too-good-to-be-true alternative to fat-laden butter, margarine was all the rage with dieters and health conscious folks alike. But, in fact, it is too good to be true. The process of turning liquid vegetable oil, which is what margarine is made out of, into fat is called hydrogenation. The result is trans fat, which is by far the worst form of fat out there. Plus, lots of preservatives and other additives are included in order to keep the product in the right form and shelf stable. Stick with the real deal instead. less

    Microwave Popcorn
Popcorn bags are lined with a chemical to keep the grease from leaking through the paper called perfluorooctanoic acid, or PFOA, which seeps into the popcorn and then into our blood. Dr Mercola states that PFOA can alter our endocrine systems and change sex hormones, in addition to other immune problems, cancer, thyroid problems, and elevated LDL cholesterol.

    Fat Free Salad Dressing
"Fat free" used to be all the rage, but we've moved past that these days. Making foods unnaturally fat free means added other flavors and enhancers in place of the fat to make up for the missing flavor and changed texture. High fructose corn syrup, sugar, and a variety of other chemicals are just a few of the things you may find in a "diet" bottle of dressing. Plus, fat helps you absorb the nutrients in your salad. less

    Corn-Fed Beef
Corn-fed beef is just what it sounds like: cattle that are fed corn (and soybeans) instead of grass, which causes the cows to bulk up faster for less money. However, the beef we eat from these animals ends up being lower in beta-carotene, vitamin E, and omega-3s.

    Canned Tomatoes
The lining of cans often contain BPA, which mimics the hormone estrogen in the body. BPA exposure has been linked to reproductive problems, behavior problems in children, and metabolic alterations. Canned tomatoes are an especially bad culprit for BPA because of their high acidity, which encourages the BPA to leak into your food.
