Many cosmetic brands advertise their products as being the best in the market. Some promise fair skin others younger looking skin. Some guarantee that the use of their products results in weight loss, or less hair fall, etc.

The masses are generally swayed away by these advertisements as not many are aware of the actual facts behind them. Here, we give you 15 facts and myths that you need to know while taking care of your skin.

1.    Fairness creams do not make you fair. If your natural skin colour is dark or dusky, it will always remain that way. Taking care of your skin by cleansing, toning and moisturising, along with exfoliating, may give you clear looking skin but would not make you fairer.

2.    Acne is not caused only due to oily skin or dandruff in the crown area of your head. Studies have shown that stress is one of the major aggravators of acne. When your mind is under tremendous stress, the levels of cortisol increases in the body leading to breakouts. Thus, for your own psychological and physical wellness, it is important to manage your stress levels.


3.    Skin care products are not the main contributors to a healthy glowing skin. What you eat is more important. If you have a healthy immune system and consume a diet that is rich in all the essential minerals, vitamins and antioxidants, your skin will glow. Along with this, a good exercise routine will help increase the blood flow and circulation in the body resulting in a healthy core and radiant skin.

4.    Botox is not harmful to the body. It relaxes the muscles where injected and minimizes the looks of lines and wrinkles.

11.    Drinking at least 8 to 10 glasses of water every day will give you flawless and clear looking skin. This is not a proven fact. Studies have shown that there is no direct or indirect correlation between drinking water and a healthy skin. Drinking excess water will not clear out toxins from the body; it is a task for the kidney. Drinking excess amount of water is potentially harmful for the body as it would lower the concentration of salt inside the body.

12.    Cosmetology is very different from dermatology. A dermatologist has complete knowledge of the skin and can treat all kinds of skin problems. A cosmetologist on the other hand deals with the cosmetics products and the effect they have on the skin.

13.    It is a known fact that due to shaving, men's skin gets their daily exfoliation and so they are less prone to severe skin ailments as compared to women.

14.    Not all skin care and beauty products are harsh or harmful for the skin. If bought according to skin type and consulted with the skin specialist, some products work wonders on the skin.


15.    Lastly, the biggest myth remains that an advanced skin treatment is not available in India and one need to go abroad for such treatments. With the increased exposure of conferences and technology, almost all scientific and medical techniques, equipment and cures are now available in India as well.
