Truth behind the 8 unfortunate love stories of Bollywood

As Indian cinema turns 100, let us look back at some of the forbidden yet celebrated love stories of Bollywood. Time and time again, we hear about budding love affairs amongst Bollywood stars. While some go on to tie the knot, many end up with broken hearts. Here are the 8 unsuccessful love stories of the most successful celebrities of Bollywood. These are the off-screen romances of Indian cinema, left on an incomplete note.

 Dev Anand and Suraiya
The girl with a golden voice Suraiya met the debonair Dev Anand when she was just in her teens. She was on the peak of her career while Dev was just another debutant in the industry. However, love is too big an emotion to consider such differences. Soon these two good-looking stars fell in love. However, due to unprecedented family pressures especially from Suraiya’s grandmother, this love story could not have a happy ending.
Post-break up Dev Anand called her a coward. At that time, he certainly loved her more than anything in the world. Suraiya, in her interview to Stardust in 1972, had poured her heart out and reminisced many moments of their love story. She recalled what Dev had told her, “The only religion is love. Don’t let social barriers or family influence your heart.” But despite all his efforts, she refused to marry him, a decision which she regretted all her life!
   Raj Kapoor and Nargis
The Showman of Bollywood, Raj Kapoor, is often remembered for his innumerable link-ups with his leading ladies. However, when it came to Nargis, something special about her made him fall madly in love with her. Although, Aag was their first film together, their relationship started to bloom with Barsaat. Their off-screen love was quite evident in their sizzling on-screen chemistry. Together, they gave many blockbuster hits. The song from Shree 420, ‘Pyar hua iqrar hua’ is still considered as the classic display of romance in Hindi-films.
However, this love story did not last long because when Nargis met Raj, he was already married. Though Nargis wanted to marry Raj Kapoor, he was reluctant to divorce his wife Krishna. Nargis waited for almost 10 years for Raj but later decided to move on and got married to her co-star from Mother India- Sunil Dutt. Whatever, may have been the outcome, but undoubtedly, Raj-Nargis is the most memorable love affair in the history of Indian cinema.
  Dilip Kumar and Madhubala
The embodiment of seduction- Madhubala, had an indeed serious relationship with the legendary actor Dilip Kumar. Unlike the other stars of their time, the duo did not shy away from media and never attempted to hide their relationship. It was the premier of their movie Insaniyat, where the press noticed them publicly walking with interlocked hands, thus leaving no scope for any questions. Their relationship was an open secret, but then why did not they get married? A question that still haunts many of their fans!
Much like a typical Bollywood flick, Madhubala’s father Attaullah Khan was against their love and never gave Madhubala the permission to marry Dilip Kumar. Her father was stern and she being the obedient daughter never over-ridded her father’s decision. During the famous court case of Naya Daur, Dilip Kumar proclaimed in the courtroom that, “I love Madhubala and I shall always love her till the day she dies.” Not surprising, even though this love-story came to a tragic end but the two names- Dilip-Madhubala are still taken in one breath by lovers.
  Sanjeev Kumar and Hema Malini
Well, certainly Bollywood is no less than a fairy-tale for some of our celebs who found their soul mates after entering the tinsel town. However, not all love-stories are rosy. One such story is of the most amazing actor of all-time, Sanjeev Kumar. He was not only the most sought after actors of his time but was also a hot favourite among women. Well, many even say that this rejection was the reason for Sanjeev Kumar to remain a bachelor for his entire life.
 Amitabh and Rekha
This is certainly the most unsuccessful love-story of one of the most successful romantic pairs of Bollywood. Their love story began on the sets of film Do Anjaane. Soon, their affair came in the limelight and even made headlines saying Rekha and Amitabh have got secretly married. But these speculations caught more fire when Rekha turned up at Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh's wedding wearing sindoor and mangalsutra. Many questions about this jodi’s affair were answered with this bold step of Rekha. Amitabh Bachchan despite the superfluous love for Rekha, never admitted it in public. On the other hand, Rekha boldly admitted her love for him.
In an interview given to Filmfare magazine in 1984, Rekha spoke about Amitabh’s denial of their relationship. She said, "Why should he have not done it? He did it to protect his image, his family, his children. Why should the public know of my love for him or his love for me? I love him and he loves me- that’s it!” Silsila was this enigmatic couple's last film together. After the shoot, their relationship began to fade. Rekha wanted to marry Amitabh and did not want to settle down with the tag of the 'other woman' in his life. She realised she has no future in this relationship. With this, their passionate love ended both on and off screen. But even after decades, the heavy aura of this sad love-story still linger.
 Mithun and Sridevi
The Disco-Dancer of Bollywood Mithun and the Chandni of many hearts Sridevi were once head-over-heels in love with each other. Their love blossomed on the sets of Jaag Utha Insaan. However, since Mithun was already married to actress Yogita Bali, they never accepted their affair in the public. As we know, that media literally works over-time when it comes to love affairs of film stars, soon this relationship also came in the limelight.
It was reported that Mithun and Sridevi had secretly got married and he had left his house to stay with her. However, the small twist in this tale came when Sridevi asked Mithun to officially marry her and divorce Yogita. But, Mithun was not ready for this! Reportedly, when Yogita tried to commit suicide, Mithun broke-off all his relations with Sridevi and came back to his wife. With this end, came a sudden news in the media that Sridevi and director Boney Kapoor have got married.
 Akshay and Raveena
She was the ultimate fantasy queen of men in the 90s. Who can forget, the yellow sari girl, dancing in the rain on tip tip barsa paani…Raveena Tandon, one actress whose beauty and sensuality put fire on screen. However, off-screen this beauty was once madly in love with none other than the Khiladi Akshay Kumar. Their love bloomed with the release of their film Mohra in 1994. They even got secretly engaged in a mandir. On the suface level, their love-story looked picture perfect. However, during their courtship phase, Khiladiyon ka Khiladi released and with that, the link-up stories of Akshay and Rekha became the sensational news in the media.
Raveena who was already dealing with the flamboyant nature of Akshay could not take this infidelity anymore and finally was left shattered. In her July 1999 interview, a heart-broken Raveena said that Akshay proposes to every girl and the speed on which he is going, he will soon have to address the parents of three-fourth of girls in Mumbai as ‘Mom and Dad’. Raveena further said that she does not blame any other woman for her break up since it was her man who was not loyal. With this, the love that could have been turned into marriage ended on a sour and sad note.
  Shilpa and Akshay
After his break up with Raveena, Akshay got involved with Shilpa. Though Shilpa made her debut in 1993 (same year when Akshay and Raveena’s Mohra released), the duo got close after the release of Main Khiladi Tu Anari in 1997. Akshay was even engaged to Shilpa. However, while the duo were shooting for Dhadkan, soon rumours of Akshay and his International Khiladi co-star, Twinkle Khanna, started making headlines. It was official that Akshay had fallen in love again and this time with Twinkle, while he was already in a committed relationship with Shilpa. less

When Shilpa heard this, she instantly broke up with him during the shoot of Dhadkan itself. She kept a low pace in the media in order to keep her film away from the controversies. However, after the success of Dhadkan, she did burst out her anger against Akshay. In the year 2000, in an interview to india-forums.com, she said, "Akshay Kumar used me and conveniently dropped me after he found someone else." After a long gap, they both met again on the sets of Bigg Boss. Wherein, Shilpa introduced him, saying, “aapne bahaut stunts kiye hain” for which Akshay promptly replied, “Ji haan! aapse aacha kaun jaanta hain.”
