The Giants Causeway | Northern Ireland
The Giants Causeway is one of the most amazing and natural place on Earth, which is located in Northern Ireland. A feature of this coast are naturally created rocks that become known as "Giant Causeway" it represents a more that 40,000 connected hexagonal columns of black basalt. How exactly were formed these amazing natural structures is not precisely known, but most likely reason for it - volcanic activity. In fact that the lava under certain circumstances and time can be converted into such strange constructions. The dramatic sight has inspired legends of giants striding over the sea to Scotland. Geological studies of these formations over the last 300 years have greatly contributed to the development of the earth sciences, and show that this striking landscape was caused by volcanic activity during the Tertiary, some 50 to 60 million years ago.
The formation of Giant's Causeway was due o intense volcanic activity. Lava welling up through fissures in the chalk be formed a "Lava plateau". Three periods of volcanic activity gave rise to the Lower, Middle and Upper Basalts, and it's the Middle Basalt rock which forms the famous amphitheaters of hexagonal columns in the Causeway.
The Giant's Causeway plays a major part of Ireland's heritage, attracting visitors from around the world each year since it was first documented in 1693 and realistic sketches were published in 1740. the Giant's Causeway has often been described as the Eighth Wonder of the World and was declared as Ireland's first World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1986.
